Professor Dominik Fischer
MD, DPhil, FEBOphth
Professor Dominik Fischer is an award-winning consultant ophthalmic surgeon, specialising in cataracts and retinal disorders.
He is passionate about providing highly personalised care utilising the latest technology and developments in ophthalmic surgery.
His patients enjoy the benefits of the state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and operating theatres at The Manor Hospital in Oxford, part of Nuffield Health.
Experience
After receiving his medical school training in Munich, Zurich and Melbourne, Professor Fischer completed his clinical and research training at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tübingen in Germany and the University of Oxford, where he read Clinical Neuroscience at Merton College and received his second doctorate for developing a new form of retinal therapy.
In 2012, Professor Fischer became a member of the medical faculty at the Eberhard Karl University Tübingen. In 2020, he was offered the position of Chair of Ophthalmology at the Justus Liebig University Giessen, but chose instead to return to Oxford to accept a position as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital and a full Professorship at the University of Oxford.
Research
Professor Fisher and his team are leading ground-breaking eye and vision research including use of artificial intelligence, gene editing, genetic therapies, subretinal surgery, robotic surgery and stem cell therapy.
Professor Fischer leads several clinical trials and is Chief Investigator of the first global post approval safety study for ocular gene therapy. He works with patient advocacy groups, the biotech and pharmaceutical industries and has been expert advisor to the European Medicines Agency.
He has given c. 100 invited lectures across the world, written c. 100 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and book chapters and edited many more.
Awards
Professor Fischer has received more than 25 awards for his work, among them the Leonhard Klein award for the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery and the Senator H. Wacker award for scientific contributions to the field of retinal disease.
